Tests & Experiments
I love to create little proof of concepts from time to time, especially as a product of learning a new software or technique. These pieces below were created entirely by me … I’m no animator so got gentle ahaha … but I try to learn enough to be able to test any idea I have, whether for a larger project or just to satisfy a creative itch or question that’s bugging me.
Mimi - a lesson in moho
Mimi was a cumulation of challenging myself to create a large cityscape piece for my portfolio (to show I can do them!) and learning Moho for the first time. My first foray into rigged 2D characters, and a big learning experience. I also created the smoke shapes in Moho. The rest is After Effects and Premiere Pro.
Christmas Pie - a 1 day test
I had a spare day and wanted to create a little atmospheric scene for the winter. Threw this together super quick, but I do like the cosiness. Click here to watch it on instagram with the music!
Field - Depth of Field shift test
I wanted to just see how subtly I could play with depth of field in a low grass/flower shot. Added the bird quickly in after effects to get the full feel.
Min - a gouache to digital test
Based on my inktober comic character (who is waiting patiently to be developed into a graphic novel pitch that my literary agent is also patiently waiting for - eek) I wanted to try painting gouache environments and comping them digitally with a 2D animated character. Each layer of the scene was painted separately, and I animated Min in Photoshop using the AnimDessin2 plug-in … this is becoming increasingly hard to animate in and spurred on my wish to learn Moho which I did for my Mimi piece.
Self Portrait in Ink
Filmed myself moving my head and then chose frames I liked, used my iPad as a lightbox and put it under the watercolour paper and inked each frame. This piece was intended to work out what type of ink fill / line worked best in this type of rotoscope animation, hence why each frame is vastly different to the last.
